GUNNER M. BROSNAN, 3RD BATTERY, 13TH BRIGADE ROYAL ARTILLERY AND “G” BATTERY, 14TH BRIGADE ROYAL ARTILLERY. Two: Second China War Medal 1856-60, 1 clasp, Taku Forts 1860 (contemporary engraved naming, engraved in serifed block capitals: 484 GUNR. M. BROSNAN. 3/13 R.A.) Abyssinia Medal 1867-68 (engraved naming in a style similar to that seen on Abyssinia Medals issued to Indian Army recipients, engraved in serifed block capital: GUNNER BROSNAN R.A.). Both medals with attractive matching old dark tone, generally Good Very Fine.

Group accompanied by copied Second China War Medal rolls (original and published) confirming China Medal and clasp. The published medal roll confirms Brosnan’s service number as “484” but notes that his service number in some muster rolls of the period is also given as “1082”.

Brosnan saw service in China as 484 Gunner, 3rd Battery, 13th Brigade Royal Artillery, and transferred to “G” Battery, 14th Brigade Royal Artillery on 1/3/1863, Brosnan seeing service with the latter Battery during the Abyssinia campaign.

Only 148 Abyssinia Medals to “G” Battery, 14th Brigade Royal Artillery.

Brosnan’s surname spelt “Brossman” in some records.

Both medals probably late issues, perhaps issued as replacements for a lost original pair of medals.
