There are three John Cooks on the Indian Mutiny Medal roll for the 1st Bombay European Fusiliers, a Private John Cook a Corporal John Cook and a Sergeant John Cook. Given that there is no rank given in the naming on this medal, it would be the medal awarded to Private John Cook.

John Cook was born in Cork, circa 1843. He enlisted at Cork for unlimited service on 22/12/1840. At the time of enlistment Cook would have been about 18 years of age and gave his trade as labourer. Cook sailed for India aboard the Euxine, saw service with the 1st Bombay European Fusiliers for 19 years and 5 months, never having risen above the rank of Private. Cook was discharged to a pension on 17/10/1860, his pension of 1 shilling per day commencing on 1/11/1860.

Pension record confirms Cook’s place of birth as Cork, that he was resident in Cork when he enlisted, and that at the time of being discharged and pensioned he was 37 years of age.
