THE PUNJAB MEDAL 1848-9 TO PRIVATE C.W. BAYLEY, 9TH LANCERS, WHO HAD PREVIOUSLY SEEN SERVICE IN THE SUTLEJ CAMPAIGN OF 1845-46 (ENTITLED SUTLEJ MEDAL WITH SOBROAN OBVERSE) AND WHO STATED ON ENLISTING THAT HE HAD PREVIOUSLY BEEN EMPLOYED AS AN “ARTIST”, AND WAS DISCHARGED IN 1852 AS A RESULT OF INJURIES RECEIVED DURING A MILITARY REVIEW AT NUSSERABAD (SEVERE FRACTURE TO HIS RIGHT LEG). Punjab Medal, 2 clasps, Goojerat, Chilianwalla (officially impressed: C.W. BAYLEY, 9TH. LANCERS.). Small test mark to obverse rim at 6 o’clock, scattered contact marks to rim and surfaces, otherwise Good Very Fine.

Medal accompanied by 8 pages copied discharge papers, extract 1851 British Army Worldwide Index, extract original Punjab Medal roll, confirming medal and clasps confirmed on roll and extract published Sutlej Medal roll, confirming 13982 Private Charles W. Baiyley also entitle Sutlej Medal with Sobroan clasp.

Charles William Bayley was born in Coventry circa 1821. He enlisted into the 9th Lancers at Coventry on 8/2/1844 for a bounty of £4 11 shillings and 6 pence and embarked for India on 29/6/1844. . At the time of enlistment Bayley was 22 years and 7 months old and gave his trade as Artist. Bayley never rose above the rank of Private and was discharged at Chatham on 22/6/1852, aged 32, after 10 years and 235 days service with the colours, Bayley’s character and conduct whilst serving being described as having been “good”

Bayley was discharged as a result of “debility”. A medical report dated 22/6.1852 in Bayley’s discharge papers provide further details.

“Fracture. At a brigade review of troops at the station (Nusseerabad?) on the 24th December 1850 in the presence of the Governor-General and the Maharajah Gualah Sing Private Bailey, during a charge, was unhorsed and kicked so severely as to lead to an agraated fracture of tht bone of the right leg, causing shortening of the leg and rendering him quite useless forfurther military purposes.”.

The 1851 British Army Worldwide Index records Bailey as a Private serving with the 9th Lancers at Umballa, India.
