THE CANADA GENERAL SERVICE MEDAL 1866-70 WITH FENIAN RAID 1870 CLASP TO PRIVATE JOSEPH DAIGLE, THE SAINT HYACINTHE PROVISIONAL BATTALION, WHO ALSO SAW SERVICE DURING THE 1870 FENIAN RAID WITH THE PROVISIONAL BATTALION OF QUEBEC AND THE WOLFSTOWN INFANTRY COMPANY. Canada General Service Medal 1866-70, 1 clasp, Fenian Raid 1870 (officially named, impressed in Canadian style upper and lower case letters: Pte. J. Daigle St. Hyacinthe Prov. Bn.). Several scattered edge nicks and bruises, otherwise Good Very Fine, and a scarce award to a small unit (only ten medals recorded).
Medal accompanied by copied extracts from the medal rolls (original and published) for the three units that Private Daigle saw service with in 1870.
Jospeph Daigle is not listed in the medal roll (original or published) for service with the St Hyacinthe Provisional Battalion in 1870. He is, however, listed on the medal roll (original and published) for both the Provisional Battalion of Quebec and the Wolfstown Infantry Company for the 1870 Fenian Raid. The Provisional Battalion of Quebec roll records him as having seen service in 1870 “25-28 May at Quebec in Jesuit Barracks, attack from enemy expected, in readiness awaiting orders” and in the Wolfstown Infantry Company medal roll as having seen service in 1870 “May-June at St. Hyacinthe”.
The published Canada General Service Medal 1866-70 roll records a total of 9 medals to the St. Hyacinthe Provisional Battalion (7 original awards and 2 late issues) with Daigle’s medal now making a total of 10 recorded medals.
The published medal roll records a total of 98 Canada General Service Medals (97 original awards and one late issue), all with Fenian Raid 1870 clasp, to the Quebec Provisional Battalion. There are four men by the name of Daigle on this roll, Alexei, Frederick, Joseph and Pierre (presumably the recipient of this medal and three relatives). The published medal roll records 12 awards (11 original and one late issue) to the Wolfstown Infantry Company. There are two men by the name of Daigle on the Wolfstown roll, Joseph and Isai (presumably the recipient and a relative).
The town of St Hyacinthe is located in Quebec province approximately 30 miles east of Montreal and some 60 miles north of the Canada-US border.
