Rooney’s medal remained unclaimed at the time of issue, and as a result was subsequently impressed “SPECIMEN” on the rim and the naming details over-struck “XXXXX”, and sold as a collector’s piece by the New Zealand Government.

New Zealand Medal 1845-66, reversed dated 1861-1866 (officially named, impressed in plain upper and lower case capital letters: A. ROONEY, 1st. WAIKATO REGt, the medal subsequently additionally officially impressed “SPECIMEN” and the naming details over-struck “XXXXX”, but the original naming details beneath the over-striking clearly visible).

Medal accompanied by copied extract from the original medal roll confirming medal to Private Abraham Rooney, 1st Waikato Regiment, attached Imperial Commissariat Transport Corps, for service during the operations in New Zealand 1861-66.

The New Zealand government over-struck unclaimed New Zealand Medals and sold them as Specimens to collectors.
