Clifford’s medal remained unclaimed at the time of issue, and as a result was subsequently impressed “SPECIMEN” on the rim and the naming details over-struck “XXXXX”, and sold as a collector’s piece by the New Zealand Government.
New Zealand Medal 1845-66, reverse dated 1861-1866 (officially named, impressed in plain upper and lower case block capitals: CORPL. M. CLIFFORD. 3RD., WAIKATO. REGt., the medal subsequently additionally officially impressed “SPECIMEN” and the naming details over-struck “XXXXXX” but the original naming details beneath the over-striking clearly visible).
Michael Clifford is confirmed on the roll of Non-Commissioned Officers and Men of the 3rd Waikato Regiment who volunteered for service with the Imperial CommisSariat Transport Corps during the operations in New Zealand, 1861-66 (copy roll accompanies medal).
