PRIVATE W. WHEELER, 21ST (ROYAL SCOTS FUSILIERS) REGIMENT. Crimea Medal 1854-56, 4 clasps, Alma, Inkerman, Balaklava, Sebastopol (officially impressed: W. WHEELER. 21st REGt.). Rivet lacking between 1st and 2nd clasp, attractively toned, Good Very Fine to Almost Extremely Fine.

William Wheeler was born in the parish of Walcot, Bath,Somerset. He enlisted into the 21st Foot at Bristol on 2/2/1839. At the time of enlistment he was 20 years old and gave his trade as book binder. He was promoted Corporal, 6/3/1861 and was discharged at Birr, Co. Offaly, Ireland, on 15/6/1861.
Wheeler had numerous brushes with the military authorities during his period of service, including for desertion and being absent without leave, on one occasion being sentenced to 168 days with hard labour and being branded with the letter “D”.
