Henry Robert Frank Bannister was born on 11/8/1890 at 153 Gordon Road, Peckham, Camberwell, London, the son of Henry Robert Frank and Eliza Bannister, his father being recorded in the 1902 census return as a 42 year old a leather packer employed in a warehouse,. He was educated at Lyndhurst Grove School School, Southward (admitted 19/2/1894). He is recorded in the 1901 census return as a 10 year old schoolboy resident in Camberwell, London with his parents and five younger brothers and sisters. Henry Bannister was a pre-war regular who enlisted into the Rifle Brigade on 21/9/1908. At the time of enlistment he was 18 years of age and gave his trade as that of car man. Following enlistment, Bannister was initially posted for service with the 1st Battalion on 13/1/1909 with the rank of Private. He transferred to the 2nd Battalion on 5/10/1910, was promoted Acting Corporal, 10/3/1915, Corporal and Acting Sergeant, 14/3/1915, and was killed in action at Aubers Ridge on 9/5/1915 and is buried in Le Trou Aid Post Cemetery, Fleurbaix, France.
