James Foster was born in the parish of Firhouse, Dublin. He enlisted as a Gunner at the depot of the North Irish Division, Royal Artillery, on 2/1/1884. At the time of enlistment Foster was 20 years of age and gave his trade as groom. He was posted for service as a Gunner with the 4th Battery, 1st Brigade, North Irish Division Royal Artillery on 23/9/1884. Dickson landed in India with the 4th Battery, 1st Brigade North Irish Division on 23/10/1884 and transferred in India as a Gunner to the 3rd Battery, 1st Brigade South Irish Division, Royal Artillery, on 1/9/1886. On 1/7/1889 the 3rd Battery, 1st Brigade South Irish Division became the No. 6 (Mountain) Battery, 1st Brigade South Irish Division Royal Artillery. Foster was posted for service as a Gunner to the 10th (Mountain) Battery Royal Artilery on 20/10/1891, transferred to the Army Reserve on 21/11/1891 and was discharged on 1/1/1896.
In addition to service at home, Foster saw service in India, 23/10/1884 to 19/10/1891. Service papers confirm active service in Burma, 1885-86 and in the Black Mountain Expedition of 1888.
