John Quirke was born 20/8/1916 and enlisted into the Royal Ulster Rifles circa September 1938, and saw 3 years and 299 days service in the ranks before being granted an emergency commission, being commissioned 2nd Lieutenant, 4th Bombay Grenadiers, Indian Army, 9/7/1942. In the post-war years, John Quirke, by then a war-substantive Captain, was transferred out of the Indian Army and commissioned Lieutenant, Bedfordshire and Hertfordshire Regiment, 17/12/1948, with seniority backdated to 9/7/1942. Quirke relinquished his commission on transfer to the Territorial Army on 17/12/1948. He resigned his Territorial Army commission on 17/11/1956.
