Lustrous Extremely Fine.The Maritime Inscription was part of the Second Line Reserve and was supplementary to the small Naval Service or Fishery Protection Force established in 1939. Its unusual name is derived from L’Inscription Maritime of France, founded in the 17th century by Jean Baptiste Colbert, Minister of Finance to Louie XIV. This was a system under which the names of men with sea experience were inscribed on a special register for use in emergencies.
