Thomas Hodgson was born in the parish of St Andrew, Newcastle, Northumberland. He enlisted into the Royal Artillery at Sunderland on 14/11/1853. At the time of enlistment he was 18 years of age and gave his trade as that of labourer. Hodgson never rose above the rank of Gunner. He transferred to the Coast Brigade Royal Artillery on 1/9/1868 and was discharged from that unit at Manchester on 15/2/1875. At the time of discharge he was 39 years old and gave his intended place of residence as Manchester. In addition at home, Hodgson also saw service in Bermuda and India.
