Sidney Ellson Tiney was born on 12/5/1881 at Thrapston, Northamptonshire. He enlisted into the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class on 3/12/1896, re-enlisting in 1899 to complete 12 years and in 1910 to complete service for a pension. Tiny rose through the ranks, being promoted Petty Officer on 1/11/1912 and Chief Petty Officer on 1/11/1920, and was pensioned on 8/7/1921. During his career, Tiny saw service in a wide variety of ships and shore establishments. During WW1 he saw service aboard the battle cruiser HMS Courageous, from 4/11/1916 to 30/1/1919. Tiney was also entitled to the 1914-15 Star and the British War Medal.

HMS Courageous was the lead ship of her class of battle cruisers built for the Royal Navy during WW1. She was completed in late 1916 and spent WW1 patrolling in the North Sea, taking part in the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight in 1917 and was present when the German High Seas Fleet surrendered at Scapa Floe in 1918, at the end of WW1.

Since Tiney joined Courageous in November 1916 he was presumably part of the first crew to see service aboard that ship after her launch.
