PRIVATE ALEX SCOTT, 1ST BOMBAY EUROPEAN REGIMENT (THE POST 1860 103RD ROYAL BOMBAY FUSILIERS AND POST 1880 2ND BATTALION ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS). Punjab Medal 1848-49, no clasp (officially named, engraved in a serifed block capitals: ALEX SCOTT. 1st. EUR. REG.). Attractively toned, Extremely Fine and rare as a no clasp medal to the 1st Bombay European Regiment.

Medal accompanied by brief copied biographical and service details along with copied extract from the original medal roll, which confirms that Scott was entitled to a no-clasp medal.

Medal roll confirms that Private Scott saw service in the Punjab with the detachment of 105 officers and men of the 1st Bombay European Regiment and 5 men from the 2nd Bombay European Light Infantry that arrived in the Punjab on 18/3/1849 under the command of Captain C.R. Hogg of the 1st Bombay Fusiliers. By 18/3/1849 the active stage of the campaign had come to a close following the actions at Mooltan, 7/9/1848 to 22/1/1849, Chilianwala,13/1/1849, and Goojerat, 21/2/1849, and as a result Scott was awarded a no clasp medal for the Punjab campaign of 1848-49.

Alexander Scott was born in Portsmouth, Hampshire. He enlisted into the Bombay Army in London on 13/8/1844 for unlimited service and at the time of enlistment gave his trade as Hair Dresser. Scott sailed for India aboard the “Duchess of Northumberland”, arriving in India in late 1844. He was initially posted for service with the 2nd Bombay European Light Infantry (the post 1857 2nd Bombay Light Infantry Regiment, post-1861 106th Bombay Light Infantry Regiment and post-1880 2nd Battalion The Durham Light Infantry), transferred to the 1st Bombay European Regiment (the post-1881 2nd Battalion Royal Dublin Fusiliers) on 10/6/1848 and saw service with that latter regiment during the closing stages of the Punjab Campaign 1848-49, Scott eventually being discharged in February 1854.

Medal also accompanied by extract from the regimental history, which confirms that Captain Hogg had earlier accompanied another batch of 50 reinforcements for the 1st Bombay European Fusiliers, who joined the left wing of the regiment, then in the process of proceeding down the river Indus to Roree, on Monday 30th October 1848, to await the arrival of the Headquarters and right wing of the regiment, prior to forming a brigade with the 4th and 19th Regiments of Bombay Native Infantry.
