PRIVATE F. THORNTON, ROYAL MARINE LIGHT INFANTRY. Egypt Medal 1882-89, undated reverse, 2 clasps, Suakin 1885, Tofrek (officially impressed: F. THORNTON PTE. R.M.L.I.). Couple of minor rim bruises, otherwise Good Very Fine to Almost Extremely Fine.

Group accompanied by 5 pages of copied service papers and copied medal roll confirming medal and clasps.

Frederick Thornton was born in the parish of Ferry Compton, Kington, Warwickshire. He enlisted into the Royal Marines at Reading on 25/10/1873. At the time of enlistment he was 19 years old and gave his trade as that of labourer. Thornton volunteered to extend his service in 1885 and was eventually discharged, having never risen above the rank of Private, on 21/6/1899. Service papers confirm service afloat and with the Royal Marine Battalion, in South Africa, 1/1/1879 to 3/6/1879 (from HMS Boadicea) and in Egypt, 17/4/1884 to 15/9/1884. Although he served in South Africa, he does not appear to have received a medal for that campaign
