Private McGowan subsequently saw service with the 2nd Battalion Seaforth Highlanders during the Boer War, and was killed in action during the disastrous dawn attack on prepared Boer positions at Magersfontein, 11th December 1899, during which the 2nd Seaforths lost 5 officers and 53 other ranks killed or died of wounds, and 7 officers and 136 other ranks wounded.
