John Kennedy was born in the parish of St Mary, Hull. He enlisted into the Royal Irish Regiment on 17/2/1917. At the time of enlistment he gave his age as 20 years, his home address as 19 Howe Street (off Jennings Street), Hull, and gave his trade as that of turner. Kennedy saw service during WW1 with the 2nd Battalion Royal Irish Regiment.

Kennedy was tried by District Court Martial on 18/2/1918 for absenting himself without leave and losing his clothing and regimental necessaries. He was sentenced to 56 days imprisonment and to be placed under stoppage of pay until stoppages had made good the value of a greatcoat, value £1 16 shillings and 9 pence.
