Medal accompanied by brief service details, copied extract from John Stirling’s “The Colonials in South Africa” regarding the services of the Frontier Light Horse during the Boer War and copied QSA Medal roll extract confirming medal and clasp.
Robert Stoltz enlisted into the Frontier Light Horse at King William’s Town on 24/02/1900, having previously seen service with the District Mounted Rifles.
The Frontier Light Horse was originally raised as the District Mounted Rifles and saw service during the “guerrilla” phase of the Boer War exclusively in Cape Colony with the Colonial Division, John Stirling recording that the regiment was “in numerous little engagements and many pursuits, and frequently suffered casualties, as in Maraisburg District in August and September 1901 and at Wilgekloof in February 1902”.
The Boer War period Frontier Light Horse is not to be confused with the 1877-1879 Basuto and Zulu wars period unit of the same name, raised in 1877 and disbanded in 1879.
