PRIVATE S.G. WISE, 3/10th and 8th BATTALION MIDDLESEX REGIMENT. Two: British War and Victory Medals (both officially named, impressed in plain block capital numbers and letters: G-52578 PTE. S.G. WISE MIDD’X R. ). British War Medal attractively toned, Good Very Fine to Almost Extremely Fine, and both medals with a length of original ribbon.

Medal Index card and medal roll confirm that Private Sidney George Wise saw service initially with the with the 3/10th Battalion Middlesex Regiment and subsequently with the 8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment, and was entitled to the British War and Victory Medals only (no Star).

G prefix is often encountered on medals awarded to Home Counties regiments for New Army men.

The 3/10th Battalion Middlesex Regiment (Territorial Force) was formed in May 1915 and saw service initially with the 201st Brigade, 67th Division. The battalion landed in France at Le Havre on 1/6/1917, transferring to the South African Brigade, 9th Division and subsequently, on 2/8/1917, to the 10th Brigade, 4th Division. The 3/10th Battalion was disbanded in France on 20/2/1918. It was presumably at this point that Wise transferred from the 3/10th to the 8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment.

On 20/2/1918 the 1/8th Battalion Middlesex Regiment was serving with the 167th Brigade, 56th Division at Airaines. On 11/11/1918 the 1/8th Middlesex Regiment was still serving with the 167th Brigade, 56th Division, in France at Blaregnies, north-east of Bavai.
