Timothy Turner was born in Twickenham, London. He enlisted into the King’s Royal Rifle Corps on 13/10/1890. At the time of enlistment he was 19 years and 11 months old, gave his trade as that of car man and stated that he had previously seen service in the 3rd Volunteer Battalion Essex Regiment. Turner saw service initially with the 4th Battalion before being posted to the 1st Battalion on 7/10/1892. Turner transferred to the Army Reserve on 19/7/1898 but was recalled for service during the Boer War and saw service in South Africa initially with the 3rd Battalion and subsequently with the 4th Battalion, from 11/12/1901, having been promoted Corporal on 21/2/1902. Turner was again transferred to the Army Reserve on 16/2/1902 and was finally discharged on 12/10/1902.

Turner did not see service overseas during the Boer War, was not entitled to any medals for that campaign, the India General Service Medal with Lushai clasp being his sole medal entitlement. In addition to seeing service at home, Turner also saw service in Burma, India and Mauritius.
