Muster Rolls record William R. Wentworth as having been born in London, enlisting on 12/9/1857 and giving his trade at the time of enlistment as Boatman.

Court martial records record William R. Wentworth as having been court martialed twice prior to seeing service in China in 1860, on 15/2/1858 at Devonport and on 10/2/1859 (location not specified). 1861 Worldwide Index confirms that Wentworth was serving as a Private with the 67th Foot at Tien Tsin in China in 1861.

Medal rolls confirm that Wentworth was invalided home from China and subsequently deserted on 02/08/1862. Muster rolls record that Wentworth deserted at Plymouth on 2/8/1862 and that prior to desertion he had been on furlough from 22/6/1862
