SERGEANT (LATER COLOUR SERGEANT AND BARRACK MASTER) HENRY CATESBY, 1ST BOMBAY EUROPEAN FUSILIERS (THE POST 1880 2ND BATTALION ROYAL DUBLIN FUSILIERS). Punjab Campaign Medal, 2 clasps, Goojerat, Mooltan (officially named, impressed in serifed block capitals: SERJT. HENRY CATESBY, 1st. EUR. FUSILIERS.). Good Very Fine.

Medal accompanied by biographical details, service record extract from FIBIS, Muster Roll transcript and copied medal roll extract. Medal roll confirms medal and clasps and that medal was “sent to India 10th Decr. 51”.

Henry Catesby was born in St Marlebone, Middlesex, 11/6/1820, the son of Frederick and Sarah Catesby. Catesby enlisted into the 1st Bombay European Fusiliers at London on 28/1/1841, sailing for India aboard the merchantman Gleneigh and arriving in India in 1841. At the time of enlistment Catesby was 21 years of age and gave his trade as japanner. Catesby is recorded as being a Colour Sergeant in the Non-Effective List of 1854 and at the time of his death on 4/6/1865 he was the Barrack Master at Ahmedabab.

Muster Roll transcript states that Catesby was born in Norfolk (presumably a transcription error), gives his regimental number as 873 and records him as having joined the Bombay European Fusiliers in India on 20th July 1841.

Catesby married Sarah Amelia Sharman at Deesa, Bombay, on 5/4/1858. Together they had two daughters, Henrietta Sarah and Wilhelmina Susanna, both born in Bombay in 1860 and 1861 respectively.
