India General Service Medal 1854-95, 1 clasp, Hazara 1891 (officially named, engraved in running script: 3128 Pte. E. Heppell 7th. Dn. Gds.). Attractively toned, Extremely Fine, the Hazara 1891 clasp rare to a European recipient.
Medal accompanied by biographical details, 7 pages copied service papers, extracts 1901 and 1911 census returns and extract original medal roll, confirming medal and clasp.
Edmund Robert Heppell (1866-1923) was born in 1866 in Deptford, Kent, the son of Robert and Ruth Heppell. He enlisted into the 7th Dragoon Guards on 4/9/1886. At the time of enlistment he was 20 years and 6 months old, gave his trade as Ship Steward. Heppell never rose above the rank of Private, transferred to the Army Reserve on 4/9/1893 and was eventually discharged on 3/9/1898. In addition to service at home, Heppell also saw service in India 1889-93. He is recorded in the 1901 census as a 37 year old Railway Detective Sergeant, resident in Aston, Warwickshire, with his 37 year old wife Amy, and in the 1911 census as a 45 year old theatre clerk, resident at 71, Tunnel Road, Liverpool.
The medal roll of Heppell’s India General Service Medal confirms that it was for service the Telegraph Department, Punjab Division, Heppell being one of seven men from the 7th Dragoon Guards to see service in the Hazara 1891 campaign with the Punjab Division Telegraph Department, Heppell seeing service with that department from 12/3/1891 to 6/5/1891
