Charles Gonne Southey was born in Marylebone, London, 23/10/1819, the son of Dr Henry Herbert and Louisa (nee Gonne) Southey, Major Southey’s father being a Harley Street doctor. Charles Southey entered the HEIC service as Cadet 14/6/1838, and was appointed Ensign, 3rd Madras European Regiment, 30/1/1839, promoted Lieutenant, 3/1/1841, Captain, 22/2/1848, and Major. 5/7/1860.
Major Southey first saw active service in the Saugor and Nerbudda territories from 6th February 1858, taking part in the Battle of Banda, 19th April 1858, the affair on the banks of the Jumna River under Major Dallas of the 1st Regiment Native Infantry on 24th April 1858, and the action near the village of Dundree, December 1858. The then Captain Southey, along with Lieutenant Hunt and Ensign Sheffield of the 3rd Madras Europeans, were all subsequently mentioned in dispatches for their services during the action near the village of Dundree on 29th December 1858, during which engagement Captain Southey commanded the left column of the regiment.
Bengal Military Fund Ledger records Major Southey married 15/7/1887 but was widowed within three years, 14/4/1860. He is recorded in the 1861 census as a 41 year old widower and Major, Indian Army, living a 1 Harley Street, London, with his father, Henry Southey, M.D., 6 siblings and and 6 servants. Major Southey died 19/4/1861 in Marylebone, London and is buried in Highgate Cemetery.
