Campion’s medal remained unclaimed at the time of issue, and as a result was subsequently impressed “SPEC” on the rim and the naming details over-struck “XXXXX”, and sold as a collector’s piece by the New Zealand Government.

New Zealand medal 1845-1866, reverse dated 1861 to 1866 (officially named, impressed in plain upper and lower case plain capital letters: G. CAMPION AUCKd. MILa., the medal subsequently additionally officially impressed “SPEC” and the naming details over-struck “XXXXX”, but the original naming details beneath the over-striking clearly visible).
