Thomas B Chaffer was born in Hull, Yorkshire and enlisted into the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers at Westminster on 14/7/1857 for a term of 10 years, sailing for India aboard the Sir Robert Sale. He died in India on 1/3/1859. Private Chaffer died intestate, leaving an estate valued at £44 9 shillings and 9 pence, which reverted to the Mooltan Treasury.
When Private Chaffer died on 1/3/1859 the 1st European Bengal Fusiliers were stationed in the recently recaptured city of Delhi. His death took place prior to the General Order of 20/6/1859, under which the 1st Bengal European Fusiliers transferred to the British Army, all of Chaffer’s service thus being with the army of the Bengal Presidency.
